Mentakab in the 1950s

This central Pahang town of  was originally known as Pasir Rawa. It is approximately close to Temerloh, Lanchang, Kampung Tualang, Kampung Gantok, Mengkarak and Kerdau. In 1901 the town was identified by the government in its plans for a new state administrative centre. However, due to a problem of uneven land, Kuantan was chosen instead.

Mentakab is located in the district of Temerloh, but due to the latter's large size and it being quite a big town, many people often think that it is a district in its own right.

The bustling nature of this town is attributed to its having a railway link from the Northeast coast to the south of Peninsular Malaysia. Trains from Gemas and Tumpat in Kelantan go through Mentakab. The original roads from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan also pass through this town. In addition to this the Semantan River runs right across the town and its waters used for agricultural activities in the surrounding areas.

Some famous people that have their names linked to this town include Datuk Bahaman, Pak Sako (Ishak Haji Muhammad), and Sudirman Haji Arshad - dynamite of a singer whose life ended in 1992 at a young age when his career was at its peak. The first two individuals are remembered for their fight against the British during the British colonisation.
