Gunung Charas - the limestone outcrop in which the caves are located. In The Charas Caves are located about 25 kilometers northwest of Kuantan at Panching on the Sungai Lembing road. Formed aeons ago by the relentless forces of nature, this cave system have for a long time been the abode of some Buddhist monks who act as caretaker for the 30- foot statue of the reclining Buddha within. To get to the main chamber you will need to climb a 20-foot metal staircase. Just before the entrance is a shrine where Buddhist visitors perform prayers before going inside. The entrance charge is RM1 per person. The main chamber at the entrance is airy and well lighted naturally, but as you go deeper, darkness gradually takes over. To assist visitors, electric spotlights are placed along the way to light up the way. As you go deeper towards the centre of the cave you will encounter several small shrines. Proceed further along the dank and wet pathway and you will reach the giant statue.
